Environmental Noise: Aircraft Noise

12.–13.12.2002

This expert meeting was the first scientific approach of the Europäische Akademie to the question of noise; it aimed at achieving an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective of environmental noise, with a main focus on aircraft noise, so as to present the state-of-the-art findings in the different fields and to point out which problems require further clarification and thus research. As the main result of the meeting, it was found that particular emphasis must be placed upon the need for better criteria to determine noise limits, and that the subjective perception of disturbance and nuisance, as well as the impairment of health, must be simultaneously considered in their entire diversity and with the broadest possible scope of application. An adequate definition of noise limits – which should take into consideration the different noise sources and should be the result of a clear and uniform quantification method – is essential, since it is the basis for any measure to be taken in the legal, economical and technical areas.

Invited speakers: Professor Dr. Klaus Kornwachs, BTU Cottbus (Germany); Professor Dr. Barbara Griefahn, Universität Dortmund (Germany); Dr. Dietmar Wurzel, DLR (Germany); Professor Dr. Rainer Friedrich, Universität Stuttgart (Germany); Carlos San Martín, AENA (Spain); Professor Helmut Strasser, Universität Giessen (Germany).
