The Future of Space Travel. Benefits and Merits
2006 Annual Conference:
22.–23.6.2006, SETA-Hotel, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler
The conference was divided into the following two sections: “Future Technological and Social Issues of Space Travel” and “Research and Exploration of Space”. Amongst others, Volker Damann, medical doctor at the European Space Agency (ESA), talked about the complex challenges of manned space travel projects. The evening lecture of 22 June was given by the astronaut and physicist Ernst Messerschmid (Universität Stuttgart). The lecture was attended by both experts and a regional audience. The speaker conveyed to his listeners his fascination with travelling in space and explained future perspectives of space travel. He concentrated on Europe’s contribution to the further exploration of space. Additionally, the philosopher of science Eberhard Knobloch (Technische Universität Berlin) spoke about Alexander von Humboldt’s travel to South America and demonstrated how the exploration of little known environments can greatly advance science.
